Library accessibility

We want Sherburn & Villages Community Library to be a welcoming, inclusive and accessible resource for all of our local community. We are implementing changes to achieve this goal.

Please get in touch with us at sherburn.library@siect.uk if you have any comments or suggestions to help make your visit better, or speak to a volunteer while at the library.

Our offering

  • Our team members will be glad to assist if you need any additional support or adjustments during your visit. You can identify us by our yellow “Hello, my name is…” badges.
  • We have produced a site plan to help customers familiarise themselves with the layout of the library before visiting.
  • We have created a social story so that customers can familiarise themselves with the library and its facilities before visiting
  • We have a hearing loop at the main desk, which can be moved to any location in the library.
  • Most of our volunteers have completed Dementia Friends training. Please ask if you need any extra assistance during your visit.
  • We stock Barrington Stoke children’s books; these books are Dyslexia-friendly, with age-appropriate content and are printed on tinted paper, using accessible fonts and layouts. They are especially suitable for dyslexic readers, or for those who would prefer simpler vocabulary or a slightly shorter book. Please ask at the desk for assistance locating these books.
  • We have a wide selection of large print books within our adult section, and we stock both adult and children’s audiobooks.
  • Our PCs are equipped with Windows Magnifier and screen readers. Please ask at the main desk for help accessing these.
  • We have an accessible keyboard with larger keys, plus a trackball mouse available for use with our public PCs – please ask for these at the desk.
  • Junior ear defenders are available – please ask at the desk.
  • A stim kit and blackout tent are available to customers to support with sensory or emotional regulation – please ask at the desk for these.
  • The customer toilet, situated at the rear of the library, is accessible.
  • Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme: our volunteers are aware of the scheme and understand that customers wearing the sunflower may need assistance, understanding or simply little more time. We carry a small stock of lanyards and other sunflower accessories; please speak to a volunteer if you feel that you would benefit from wearing one.

Busier times

Our library is usually fairly quiet, but there are times that it may be a little livelier! Children’s activity sessions may mean the library could be noisier during the following times:

  • Mondays 10:15-11:00
  • Thursdays 13:30-14:30
  • Fridays 09:30-12:00
  • Saturdays 09:30-12:30

Help joining the library

If you would like to join the library and would prefer not to do this at the main desk, we provide an application form which can be filled in with your details and then simply handed to a library volunteer. These forms are available in our accessibility folder near the library entrance.
